Green Sherborne

For local people concerned about the environment, and a website for organisations that support them. Ecology, sustainability and community are the key. Our goal is to become an online resource to publicise news and events, projects and groups, and provide a source of reference. Welcome to Sherborne Green.

Productive Planting 2

Raspberries are a great productive fruit

Dig Up Sherborne meets again, but this time at the Butterfly House in Castle Gardens, on Tue 14 June 2011 7:00pm. Steve Fry hoped last time to show us some of the larger productive plants available, but due to the impracticality of lugging whole trees to the Zest Café in the back of his car this has had to wait to this month’s talk.  Do come and find out more about the sorts of plants you can plant in your garden that are both productive and beautiful. For regular attendees, please note the change of time and venue.

Dig Up Sherborne is a 2011 Transition Sherborne project encouraging residents of the town and surrounding area to quite literally dig up Sherborne! It is aimed at beginners with little or no experience of gardening, and local experts will share their knowledge on all aspects of growing fruit and vegetables.

The combination of the market and the farm provides a wonderful opportunity to spend quality time with Family and Friends in an atmosphere of fun and happiness.

Great stalls full of local food, art, crafts and ideas.

Plus at no charge:

  • Special Farm walks at 12.00 and 2.00pm

Gaia, the Cabaret (Transition Dorchester)

Wed 1 Jun 2011 8pm. £3
Pengelly Room, Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester DT2 8PY
Our neighbours at Transition Dorchester are showing Gaia, the Cabaret, described as the most fun you can have with science. Peter Horton covers 14 billion years in the space of an hour and a half, and shows us that we humans take ourselves far too seriously: as far as Gaia is concerned, the bacteria are far more important than we are, and they are the ones having the last laugh!

Originally commissioned for James Lovelock’s 90th birthday party in July 2009, Gaia – the Cabaret! has since been performed in Norwich, Purbeck, Plymouth, Exeter, Bath, Bristol, Cheltenham and the Science Museum in London.

The cabaret is an interactive celebration of the scientific world view of Gaia Theory. With songs, sketches and surprises, it takes an entertaining and provocative look at how the dynamic systems of planet Earth work and evolve, and where we as a species really fit in.

Productive Planting

Raspberries are a great productive fruit

Castle Gardens have agreed to continue our popular Dig Up Sherborne course with two months on productive planting. This will include loads of information about fruit and nut trees and bushes.

The first evening will be on 10th May 2011 at the Zest Cafe, 1 Abbey Road, Sherborne DT9 3LE, starting at 7:45pm. Entrance is £3, which includes tea, coffee and refreshments.

Everyone is welcome. Even with a small garden or just window boxes the monthly talks will guide you through preparing your space, choosing easy plants to grow, planning your year and much more, with the speaker answering as many of your questions as possible.

The talks are kindly supported by Castle Gardens and organised by Transition Sherborne. Full up-to-date information can be found here on our website.

The Antidote Film to Age of Stupid: InTransition1.0

Very much an antidote to The Age of Stupid shown in March, InTransition1.0 is a detailed film about the Transition Movement, filmed by those people around the world who have started rebuilding their local economies and communities with creativity, imagination and humour. It is positive, solutions focused, viral and fun. The 50-minute film will be followed by an open forum to share ideas on how the Transition Movement can benefit Sherborne and the surrounding area.

InTransition1.0 will be shown on Wednesday 13th April at Cheap Street Church Hall, Sherborne DT9 3BJ. Doors open at 7:15pm and the film will start at 7:30pm. Entry is £3, with concessions available.
