Green Sherborne

For local people concerned about the environment, and a website for organisations that support them. Ecology, sustainability and community are the key. Our goal is to become an online resource to publicise news and events, projects and groups, and provide a source of reference. Welcome to Sherborne Green.

Dig Up Sherborne

Dig Up Sherborne is a 2011 project encouraging residents of the town and surrounding area to quite literally dig up Sherborne! Not the roads (though that might have been useful during last year’s Arctic conditions). No. Gardens, patios, window sills, shared spaces even. Initially starting with a series of talks at Zest Cafe, Dig Up Sherborne is aimed at beginners with little or no experience of gardening. Local experts will share their knowledge on all aspects of growing fruit and vegetables. . . . → Read More: Dig Up Sherborne

Mince pies, Community Orchards and Mulled Wine

Have any of us in Sherborne heard of the Community Orchard in Dorchester and want to find out more? Jenny Shackleford will talk about this and much more at our next meeting, to be held at the newly refurbished Swan Inn, off Cheap Street, Sherborne DT9 3AX. Jenny is secretary of Dorchester’s Transition Town and will give a personal account of their achievements. We will also have mulled wine and mince pies to celebrate the season. In case you wondered, a Transition Town is a town or village which has decided to take steps to reduce its environmental impact and concentrate on building up a sustainable community.

Jenny’s presentation is on Wednesday 8th December, in the upstairs room of the Swan Inn. Doors open at 7:15pm and the presentation will start at 7:30pm. Entry is free, but to cover the costs of the hall and food there will be a retiring collection. . . . → Read More: Mince pies, Community Orchards and Mulled Wine

Productive Trees for the Communities of Sherborne Area

The Community Orchard (or Productive Tree Planting) group is interested in helping set up schemes for the planting and long term maintenance of productive trees, primarily fruit and nut trees, for people living in the Sherborne area. The aim is to help provide people with a source of free food and a new productive space where community events such as harvesting and pressing can take place. We hope that these spaces will become central to the communities they serve, acting to engage people of all ages in building resilience and sustainability, while furthering a sense of togetherness into their communities. . . . → Read More: Productive Trees for the Communities of Sherborne Area

Transition Sherborne Meeting 13 Oct

Apologies for the short notice, but our next meeting will be tomorrow evening at 7pm, at Cheap Street Church Hall, Cheap Street, Sherborne. The summer has seen a lot of change, with projects started, people joining, people leaving. So the evening will be very much a reflection of where we are now, what we have done so far, the successes and setbacks, and a consolidation of what we have. And also to discuss and air our and your hopes for the future. . . . → Read More: Transition Sherborne Meeting 13 Oct

Theory

The term Peak Oil refers to the top, or peak, of a time-based global oil production curve. The graph, when smoothed, looks like a standard normal-distribution curve (visually similar to an upside-down bell). It states that we have reached (or have already passed, or are just about to) the peak level of oil production. Or put . . . → Read More: Theory

Garden Share

The garden share scheme links up people who have garden space with committed growers. The benefits for the garden owners include a share of the produce, the pleasure of seeing a lovely vegetable plot and a sense of community. . . . → Read More: Garden Share

Visions for the Future

Transition Sherborne continues its series of events for 2010 with Visions for the Future, at Cheap Street Church Hall, Cheap Street, Sherborne (opposite Barclays Bank), on Wednesday 7th July, starting at 7pm.

This will be an opportunity to look at projects that can be started in the local area, with the aim of forming groups, and review some that have already started (such as the garden share scheme, the new allotments, productive tree planting, the successful Do-able Renewable Energy Fair held in April). We will be using a technique called Open Space in the meeting, which will be fully explained at the time but basically allows people to come along with ideas and sound them out to a wider audience. So come prepared with ideas that inspire you… . . . → Read More: Visions for the Future
