Sustainable Sherborne

Have any of us in Sherborne heard of the Community Orchard in Dorchester and want to find out more? Jenny Shackleford will talk about this and much more at our next meeting, to be held at the newly refurbished Swan Inn, off Cheap Street, Sherborne DT9 3AX. Jenny is secretary of Dorchester’s Transition Town and will give a personal account of their achievements. We will also have mulled wine and mince pies to celebrate the season. In case you wondered, a Transition Town is a town or village which has decided to take steps to reduce its environmental impact and concentrate on building up a sustainable community.

Jenny’s presentation is on Wednesday 8th December, in the upstairs room of the Swan Inn. Doors open at 7:15pm and the presentation will start at 7:30pm. Transition Sherborne is showing a film on Wednesday 10th November at Cheap Street Church Hall, Sherborne DT9 3BJ. InTransition1.0 is a 50-minute film that introduces the Transition Movement, and this will be followed by an opportunity to share stories and ideas on how the movement can benefit Sherborne and the surrounding area. The summer has seen a lot of change, with projects started, people joining, people leaving. So the evening will be very much a reflection of where we are now, what we have done so far, the successes and setbacks, and a consolidation of what we have. Transition Sherborne continues its series of events for 2010 with Visions for the Future, at Cheap Street Church Hall, Cheap Street, Sherborne (opposite Barclays Bank), on Wednesday 7th July, starting at 7pm.

This will be an opportunity to look at projects that can be started in the local area, with the aim of forming groups, and review some that have already started (such as the garden share scheme, the new allotments, productive tree planting, the successful Do-able Renewable Energy Fair held in April). We will be using a technique called Open Space in the meeting, which will be fully explained at the time but basically allows people to come along with ideas and sound them out to a wider audience.
