Green Sherborne

For local people concerned about the environment, and a website for organisations that support them. Ecology, sustainability and community are the key. Our goal is to become an online resource to publicise news and events, projects and groups, and provide a source of reference. Welcome to Sherborne Green.

About

Sustainable Sherborne is a website for local people who are concerned about the environment, and it is for the organisations and community that support them. Ecology, sustainability and community are the key. The goal is to become an online resource for the various like-minded organisations in the area, to publicise news and events, provide a source of reference and perhaps even to be an online magazine for the people of Sherborne area.
The future is not necessarily bleak, not while there are people to act. And action is important, for what purpose is guilt without action? So a lot of space has been dedicated to the many projects being undertaken right now, here in the heart of West Dorset.
The site is article-based. New posts will appear here on the front page, and be listed under the project, group or category they are part of. Want to get involved? Please do contract us using the form on the About page. Or if you are interested in a particular project there is a named contact on each of the project pages. We’d love to hear from you.

The site can be loosely split into the following categories:

Events:
Details of events held by the various sustainable organisations in the area can be found on the Events page.

Projects:
Transition Sherborne, the Environment Forum and others have a number of projects on the go at any one time, sometimes jointly organised (such as the successful Do-able Renewable Energy Fair held in April 2010). Each project has been given its own page and news feed.

Groups:
While projects are practical, with a defined purpose, a group is more abstract. A group can be involved in a range of projects, and a project can be organised by a number of groups. It’s all fluid, really! The important distinction is a project has a practical manifestation, whereas a group is a collection of interested individuals.

Transition Sherborne:
Here we show you who we are and why we’re doing what we’re doing (but not what we’re doing – that’s detailed in the Group and Project pages). We also introduce a brief bit of theory behind the three axioms of Transition (Oil Scarcity, Climate Change, Resilience), with links to more in-depth information.

Sherborne Environment Forum:
This is the home page of Sherborne’s own Environment Forum, who are under the auspices of the Sherborne Area Partnership and report to the local council. They hold public meetings every 2-3 months at the council offices in Newland, which anyone is welcome to attend.

More About the Site:
This site was designed and developed by Stephen Holdway of Transition Sherborne. It is powered by WordPress, using the Atahualpa Theme. It is a collaborative site, with contributors from various organisations. For web hosting I use Eco Web Hosting, an excellent web host with ecological crudentials.

A Note on Pages and Posts:
The Home menu item lists posts from all categories. These include news items, events, information, meeting minutes, articles, project updates, group notifications, and more. Each post is categorised into one or more topics – to see a list of all topics in a category click on the item in the category list in the left sidebar.

The rest of the menu items (such as this screen) are pages and contain, generally, static or non-transitory information (though a number do include a list of the most recent posts relevant to them).

Over time the majority of content will be post-based articles and the best way to search for content either via the category list or via the search box at the top of the form.

Joining:
There are various levels of access, as follows:

  • Subscriber: read-only access but can post comments to articles.
  • Contributor: can write articles which are subject to editing – not for control but to ensure appropriate categorisation.
  • Author: can write articles and self-publish.
  • Editor: can write and edit articles and pages, and publish others’ posts.

Most of our writers are Contributors. They may be group contacts, project contacts, or general members of the community. There are no rules as to who can write. We only ask you follow standard rules of conduct and that your articles are in-line with Transition principles (sustainability, community, environmental). And relevant!

If you feel you would like to contribute, or have a general enquiry, or wish to subscribe, please do contact us using the form below. Please do provide as much information as possible, especially if applying to become a Contributor, and try to make your subject as relevant as possible.

Enjoy the site!
